Changes in Urban Growth Patterns in Busan Metropolitan City, Korea: Population and Urbanized Areas

Cities have exhibited spatial patterns of expansion or compacting in the process economic and population growth. South Korea is a well-known example country that has experienced rapid growth urbanization. This study’s target area, Busan Metropolitan City (BMC), urban but, over past 20 years, underwent stagnation. How will change if stagnates? study aimed to identify changes using urbanized areas BMC, Korea, from 1980 2020. It uses Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, Bachi’s Index Standard Deviational Ellipse, Social Network Analysis concentration, centrality, inland land, centrality migration. The results showed (1) BMC’s pattern extended outward, despite stagnation since 2000; (2) next years expanded polarization city’s center outskirts; (3) built-up area all directions for 40 years—the was seen around but moved northeast 2020; (4) 2000, when first emerged, migration been more evident outskirts. These suggest there no sustainable planning development strategy stagnant, expansionary continue, cities reach limit.
